Speaker Rev. George Ong
Sermon Date 2011-12-18

1O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
2I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.
3Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.
4I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.
5My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.
6On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.
7Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.
8My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

1. The Sustaining Presence (V1)

O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

2. The Sacrificial Praise (V 2-5)

I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.
Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.
I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.
My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you.

Hebrew 13:15
Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise
- the fruit of lips that confess his name.

Job 1:20-21
20At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship
21and said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised."

3. The Sovereign Protection (V 6-8)

On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night.
Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings.
My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.

Wrong concept of God and Believers relationship:

Cat Theology - Mother cat (illustrates of God) does everything and kitten (illustrates believers) does nothing.
Monkey Theology - Mother monkey (Illustrates God) does whatever she wants and young monkey (illustrates believers) need to holding unto her tightly.

Deuteronomy32:10 -11

10In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye, 11like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions.

almost acceptable explanation of God and believers relationship: Eagle Theology
Mother eagle (illustrates God) observes young eaglets (illustrates believers) growth process and in time, mother eagle will destroy the nest and eaglets will seek ways of survive from the fall. But mother eagle in critical situation, will swiftly come in to help the eaglets.

Closing Prayer…

God, we thank you that we can know you better this morning through your Word in Psalm 63.
We know you as the God who is always present with us to sustain us during our time of need. (The Sustaining Presence)
We know you as the God who deserves to be praised whether we are going through good or tough times. (The Sacrificial Praise)
We know you as the God who is able to protect us in times of our dangers and tribulations. (The Sovereign Protection)
