Sermon Date 2012-01-01

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

1. The Salt Metaphor Informs Us That Christians Are Important To This World.

`Here lies the remains of A. W. Milne; When he came to us, there was no light; When he died, there was no darkness’

2. The Light Metaphor Emphasizes That Christians Will Make A Positive Influence In This Sin-Darkened World

`We planned everything. We anticipated everything. Except for candles.’

“Do all the good you can; By all the means you can; In all the ways you can; In all the places you can; To all the people you can; As long as ever you can.”
- John Wesley

3. To Be Salt & Light, Christians Must Go Out Into The World Of People Who Are Dying Without The Message Of The Gospel

The greatest threat to Christianity is Christians trying to sneak into heaven incognito without ever sharing their faith, without ever living out the Christian life, without ever becoming involved in the most significant work God is doing on planet earth.
- Dr. James Stewart
